Knitted Green Afghan

August 23rd, 2007

I bought a pattern book for knit afghans and got a little carried away. I made this!

I used Vanna’s Choice yarn, because I’d been curious to try it (since it’s more expensive, of course). I *really* like it. It’s soft and supple. Though it says it’s worsted weight, it feels a little bulkier than Caron’s Simply Soft.

For this blanket, I used two strands at once (which is why it didn’t take long) of the Vanna’s Choice in Dusty Green, about 13 skeins. I used 12.75 mm needles, circular. The pattern is made up of only knits and purls, nothing fancy or difficult. I got it from a Leisure Arts book.

Here’s a closeup:

This is my first complete knitting project, and I definitely feel more comfortable with knitting now. I’m making another blanket (because this one is so warm and soft) with the same yarn in purple and from the same book. The new one uses cables and slip stitches. I’ll post progress pics soon!

Blue and White Snowflakes

August 8th, 2007

I finished another! I *love* the puffy stitches and the star shape and wanted to see how they’d look when connected. I connected using a whip stitch, but I don’t think it’s as sturdy as, say a single crochet (which I will use next time.)

The middle of the blanket scrunched up:

One thing I discovered is that I love the Caron Simply Soft Off White color. It looks kinda yellow in the store, but made into a blanket it looks antique-y and elegant.

On a completely unrelated note, I know I need to get back to knitting. *sigh* Maybe I’ll finally finish that scarf…

Pink Blanket

August 2nd, 2007

I wanted a thick blanket, one to keep me warm when certain people turn the AC up really high. I picked this pattern because it uses two strands of yarn together, and the result is double thick! The downside is that it requires a *ton* of yarn. So, I bought the less expensive sort. I’m using Red Heart in Rose Pink. It’s worsted weight, but two strands together require a 9mm hook. The pattern suggested 68 stitches across, but I wanted a big blanket, so I used 80 instead.

Here’s a pic of what I’ve got so far:

And a closeup of the stitch, which involves a single crochet, chain two, single crochet pattern all the way across:

Here are a few pics of the finished blanket. It’s all packed away now, ready to fly off to my friend, Heather.
