Two Movies

Two Days in Paris
Well, I adored Julie Delpy already. This movie was just one more reason why. She’s so smart and thoughtful (and beautiful like Paltrow and Kidman). In an interview, Delpy talks about how she wrote for years and years before finally getting the money to make a movie. Seeing her passion and persistence is inspiring. She’s about my age, so it warms my heart to see her success. She believed in her vision for years and years without recognition. Finally, this movie won her an Independent Spirit award. The movie is elegant, truthful and unapologetic. *recommends*

Beyond the Gates
This one is about the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. It takes a different view than the other movie about this event (Hotel Rwanda). This one is a BBC movie, and you can see the British versus American style of moviemaking. Beyond the Gates came from the perspective of catholic missionaries, so it explored the issues with bringing Western religion to an African nation as well as taking a close look at the people involved in both sides of the genocide. I definitely recommend this movie, too.
